A Home Built from Resilience: Our First Feature in a Magazine
It’s a special kind of honor when a project close to your heart receives public recognition. For us, that honor came when our very first press-featured project was not a client’s commission, but our own family home. The story was beautifully captured by Ms. Thiên Thuỷ, who was the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious Nhà Đẹp magazine at the time. Nowadays, you can read the article again using this citation LINK.
The house, with its architecture and interior design brought to life by my father – architect Trần Viễn Hoàng, was completed in 2006. However, this home was more than just bricks and mortar; it was a sanctuary and an unforgettable milestone for our family. Its story began during the challenging years of the economic recession. We had to make a significant life change, moving from a very large, prominent house in District 1 to this new, much smaller space. This transition was a heavy blow, but this house came to represent the incredible efforts of my parents to navigate that difficult turning point in our lives.
More than just a home, it became a testament to my father’s creativity. He was faced with the challenge of harmonizing aesthetics and functionality within a footprint that was a fraction of our previous residence. It was here that he truly demonstrated his remarkable ability to handle the most intricate corners and compact spaces, maximizing every inch to serve the family’s needs. The house was not just a place to live; it was a clever, beautiful solution born out of necessity and ingenuity.
This home stands as a symbol of our parents’ perseverance and my father’s architectural talent for turning constraints into opportunities for thoughtful design.
A Glimpse Into My Family’s Legacy
I grew up in a family rooted in both business and design. My grandfather was a construction contractor who worked on several notable landmarks in Saigon, including the former An Binh Hospital (known as Trieu Chau Hospital in 1945 – 2001) and the Orient Clock Tower (1964 – 2014) on Nguyen Hue Boulevard.
My father came of age during a period of significant economic and historical upheaval in Vietnam, but his innate talent for design and painting remained. In 2007, the house he designed for us was featured in Nhà Đẹp Magazine. That same year, he participated in several forums discussing the city’s green architecture.
Since 2015, a few years after my graduation, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with my father to design and build residential projects. Even though my own career path has branched out into various other creative and business fields, a part of me remains deeply connected to the process of creating beautiful and comfortable spaces for homeowners.
